Vallejo

Vallejo is mainly known to local northern California residents as the city that hosts Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (formerly Marine World). While this is mainly what comes to mind, it has a much more distinguished history being named the California State Capital twice in the past.

While the city itself has had some downfalls, such as having to file bankruptcy, some of the more positive things are the State Forest Service, The California Maritime Academy, and the seasoned Naval Base (decommissions in 1996) located on Mare Island. Mare Island has also been a  valuable asset to the city as it’s a main place for imports and exports as well as ferrying people across the bay to the other big cities in the area such as San Francisco and Oakland.

CAL INC IS GOLD SHOVEL CERTIFIED!

Gold Shovel Standard (GSS) is a nonprofit organization committed to improving workforce and public safety and the integrity of buried infrastructure. GSS believes that greater transparency in all aspects of damage prevention among buried-asset operators, locators and excavators is essential to drive continuous improvement, and vital to increasingly safe working conditions and communities.

Standardized damage prevention measurements are a key part of the GSS mission, and the establishment and broad deployment of metrics are core components of Gold Shovel Standard’s efforts to improve public and workforce safety. Gold Shovel Standard believes that no significant reduction in damages will be obtained unless all responsible parties (operators, excavators, locators) continuously improve, and measurements underpin continuous improvement.

What is the Gold Shovel Standard?

Every six minutes in the United States, an underground utility line is damaged during excavation work. In 2014, PG&E experienced nearly 2,000 dig-ins to our underground facilities—that's almost six dig-ins per day, resulting in $11 million in damage for the year.

In response, PG&E launched the Gold Shovel Standard, a first-of-its kind excavation safety program designed to reduce dig-ins and protect PG&E's underground gas and electric system. With safety as highest priority, PG&E developed the Gold Shovel Standard Certification process to ensure that PG&E's hired contractors adhere to the safest excavation standards. Safe excavation prevents injuries, property damage, inconvenient outages, project delays and high costs.

Certification Requirements

Beginning January 1, 2016, contractors who wish to excavate or subcontract out excavation work for PG&E must obtain Gold Shovel Standard Certification by making a commitment to safe digging practices in accordance with the California "One Call Law" (California Government Code 4216) and the Common Ground Alliance best practices for excavation.
